What Is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy is about getting back to the things that matter.
Getting your child ready for school. Making breakfast independently after a stroke. Managing a workday with chronic pain. Playing with your grandchildren. The daily activities OT focuses on aren't just tasks — they're the moments and routines that make up a life.
OTs are university-trained and registered with AHPRA. At Watagan Health Hub, our OT service launches mid-2026 — delivered by an experienced clinician committed to evidence-based, client-centred care, serving families and individuals across Cooranbong, Morisset, Lake Macquarie, the Hunter Valley and Newcastle.
Who Can Benefit from Occupational Therapy?
Children & Young People
Occupational therapy is one of the most widely requested allied health services for children in Lake Macquarie, Morisset and the Hunter Valley with developmental, sensory, neurological and behavioural needs. It supports children with:
- Developmental delay and delayed motor milestones
- Sensory processing differences
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- ADHD — organisation, attention and self-regulation
- Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder)
- Handwriting and fine motor difficulties
- School readiness and classroom participation
- Emotional regulation and behaviour
- Self-care skills
Paediatric OT uses a play-based approach, meeting children in their natural environment to build skills in ways that are engaging, functional and sustainable.

Adults
Occupational therapy for adults in Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley focuses on restoring or maintaining independence following illness, injury or the onset of a disability. It supports adults living with stroke and acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury and physical disability, mental health conditions, neurological conditions, chronic pain and fatigue, and more.
OT for adults is highly practical — focused on real-world goals, whether that's cooking independently, returning to a sport, managing a daily routine, or accessing the right assistive technology or home modifications.
Functional Capacity Assessments (FCA) for NDIS planning are also a core part of what our OT service provides. If you need an FCA for a new plan or plan review, please mention this when you register.
Older Adults & Aged Care
Maintaining independence and safety at home — and in residential care — is one of the most important priorities for older Australians. Occupational therapy plays a central role in helping older adults across Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley live well, reduce falls risk and stay engaged in meaningful activity.
Our mobile OT service supports older adults with falls risk assessment, home safety evaluations, home modification recommendations, assistive equipment prescription, activities of daily living, and cognitive assessment for people living with dementia.

Complete the expression of interest form on this page. We'll add you to our OT waitlist and reach out as soon as appointments become available from mid-2026.
Step 2 — A Friendly Call First
Before your first appointment, our team will call to have a genuine chat about your needs — to answer questions, understand your situation, and confirm that OT at Watagan is the right fit.
Step 3 — Initial Assessment
Your occupational therapist takes a thorough look at the full picture — your current function, your goals, your home and community environment, and your support network. Nothing is assumed.
Step 4 — Goals That Reflect Your Life
Goals are developed collaboratively — with you, your family, carer, support coordinator or school. Your therapy plan is built around what matters most to you, not just what's clinically convenient.
Step 5 — Therapy, Equipment & Reporting
Sessions are delivered where they're most useful. Assistive technology and home modification recommendations are made where appropriate, and written reports are provided as needed for NDIS, GPs and schools.

Our Approach to Occupational Therapy
What Does an Occupational Therapist Actually Do?
Participation in everyday life is the goal
People sometimes ask what occupational therapists actually do — the name doesn't make it obvious. The answer is: they help people do the things that give their life meaning.
When a child struggles to keep up at school, an adult can't manage their morning routine after illness, or an older person can no longer shower safely at home — these aren't just practical problems. They affect confidence, independence and identity. OTs work at exactly that intersection.
The approach is always holistic — looking at the person, their environment and the activities involved, then designing interventions that close the gap between where someone is and where they want to be. At Watagan Health Hub, OT will work alongside music therapy, speech pathology and myofunctional therapy as part of a connected allied health team across Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley.
What to Expect at Watagan
Therapy that fits your life
We know that navigating allied health services can feel overwhelming. Our aim is to make the process as simple and supportive as possible.
It starts with a conversation — to understand what's going on and what you're hoping for. Once you're in, your OT will conduct a thorough assessment of your current function, your goals, your environment and the people around you. Nothing is prescribed from a template.
Therapy is delivered where it makes most sense for your goals — at home, at school, at the clinic or in the community. Written reports are provided for NDIS plan reviews, GP correspondence and school or workplace accommodations. Goals are reviewed regularly and updated as you develop, with open communication throughout.
