Music Therapy for Older Adults and Aged Care in the Hunter Valley

Updated: May 1

Watagan Health Hub provides music therapy services to older adults living at home and in residential aged care across the Hunter Valley and Lake Macquarie region. Whether you are a family member arranging care for a parent, an aged care facility manager looking for a reliable mobile provider, or a home care package manager seeking to enrich a client's care plan, this page explains what our service offers, how it works, and how to arrange it.

Why music therapy for older adults?

The benefits of music therapy for older adults extend well beyond dementia care, though that is where the evidence is strongest. Music therapy supports older adults with a wide range of conditions and life circumstances: it reduces social isolation and loneliness through meaningful engagement and connection; improves mood and reduces depression and anxiety, which affect a significant proportion of older adults in residential care; maintains cognitive engagement and mental stimulation; supports physical function through music and movement activities; provides a vehicle for reminiscence and life review that supports psychological wellbeing; manages chronic pain through distraction and neurological pain-modulating mechanisms; and provides meaningful engagement for people in palliative care. The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care recognises the importance of meaningful activity and social engagement in aged care, and music therapy is one of the most evidence-supported means of delivering both.

Conditions we support in older adults

Our aged care music therapy service supports older adults living with: dementia and mild cognitive impairment across all stages, Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders, stroke and acquired brain injury recovery, depression and anxiety in older adults, chronic pain and palliative care, social isolation and adjustment to residential care, COPD and cardiac conditions where music therapy supports respiratory function and exercise tolerance, and general age-related decline where maintaining engagement and quality of life is the primary goal.

Residential aged care facility services

Watagan Health Hub visits residential aged care facilities across the Lake Macquarie and Hunter Valley region. We offer individual sessions for residents with complex, specific or clinical needs, and group programs for broader engagement, social connection and quality of life outcomes. Group programs are effective for residents with mid-stage dementia and can provide significant benefits for the facility in terms of reduced agitation, improved mealtime behaviour and greater staff capacity.

Funding options for residential facilities include facility-funded arrangements for regular programming, resident self-funded individual sessions, DVA for eligible veterans and their partners, and Home Care Package-funded sessions where residents remain on a package. We are experienced in working within aged care documentation frameworks and can provide the reporting required for accreditation purposes. Facility partnership arrangements for regular scheduled programs are available. Contact us to discuss.

Home-based music therapy for older adults

For older adults living in their own homes, music therapy visits provide a familiar, comfortable setting in which the therapeutic work is often most effective. The familiar environment supports reminiscence, reduces anxiety and enables the therapist to observe the person's daily context. Home visits are available across Lake Macquarie, Morisset, the Hunter Valley and the Central Coast. Home Care Package (HCP) funded, CHSP funded and private clients are all welcome. Carer participation in sessions is welcomed and clinically beneficial.

How to arrange music therapy for a family member or resident

No referral is required. Contact Watagan Health Hub directly on (02) 4977 1222 or info@wataganhealthhub.com.au. It helps to have the following information ready: the person's name and age, their living situation (home or facility name and suburb), a brief description of their current needs and what you are hoping music therapy might achieve, and their funding type (HCP level, DVA, private, etc). We aim to respond within two business days. Visit our music therapy Lake Macquarie service page, read our post on music therapy for dementia, or book a music therapy session online.
